Women Can’t Write About Sex?

By Irene Ogrodnik

According to an article in Reuters, Kate Copstick, the new owner of Britain’s Erotic Review , claims women are not passionate enough about sex and concentrate too much on feelings to be able to write raunchy stories.

In a controversial decision, Copstick will (almost) exclusively use male writers because “they know a lot more about sex.” I doubt that such will settle well with readers–especially women.

The article also states Copstick claims that women aren’t straightforward about sex (which, for the most part, I can agree with).  The one thing that isn’t clear to me in Copstick’s reason for avoiding women writers is this: Won’t her decision to exclude women just contribute to their lack of openness regarding sex? If these women are told they can’t write about sex, how are they expected to write freely about it, without facing more negative criticism than male writers?
